[Clint leans in the doorway.] Why would anyone want to stay here? Unless they're already dead. But even then, I dunno, there's probably something to magic to try and get those people back home alive and well.
No matter how much Akechi tries to hide his own thoughts from others, he's still just a kid who can't quite stop the way his narrow shoulders droop with quiet relief at the answer.]
Agreed. I thought you were more sensible than that, so I'm grateful to know my judgement of your character isn't so off.
She should go home when she gets the chance. She's got family. [The teen persona squad, that is.] I know she likes the idea of being an Avenger, but...frankly, what she does with you all is so much weirder and wilder.
[The corner of akechi's mouth quirks just barely, a ghost of a smile as he huffs out a mirthless laugh.
To be perfectly honest, after coming in so hot, he's a little shaken off his game by how easy Clint is making this. He was expecting a fight, just the way it's always been with adults, but here the man is just offering freely. Akechi's not used to offers like that without some kind of diabolical price attached.]
Would you? I'm well aware that even if we were on better terms currently, she wouldn't listen to me. [But after their last fight? Well...] It strikes me that the fae may also be influencing her decisions. Have you noticed anything unusual?
[That gets him to stand up straighter. He'd be a hypocrite to say nobody should be taking deals, no matter how much he would say he was desperate and not thinking clearly--the perpetual chill in his bones says that much--but getting fae involvement is never a good idea.]
She... [His brow furrows. Is it unusual?] Isn't always all that talkative in the morning, but then again, half the time she's not even awake in the morning. Or she's too deep in her game to say much of anything anyway. We've been working on more signing in case my hearing goes again, but--
Shit. I'll talk to her. She seemed in a hurry to go out and practice with her bow...gonna assume there was a fight?
[ah, so barton doesn't know. There's a quiet, thoughtful moment where Akechi's jaw pinches and he considers whether or not to out the girl, but in the end, it's her own business, even if that was the initial cause of their fight.]
What happened with your hearing? Fae-influenced or something prior to this place?
[It's an important enough distinction to Akechi.]
There was. [His arms cross over his chest, fingers tapping idly at his elbow.] She'll be upset to know that you and I've been speaking at all, so don't mention I was here. But I couldn't let it sit. The idea that she might do something drastic to tie herself to this place out of spite... It didn't feel like an impossibility.
[Clint does a quick tip of his head, a little tap to the hearing aid tucked in his ear.] Before. [He doesn't elaborate because it's not the point, and any details don't matter much.
What matters is Futaba. And while they haven't spoken all that much, he doesn't mind Akechi. He knows there's complicated shit there, though. To put it lightly. So, yeah, not mentioning he came by shouldn't be an issue.] She does like drastic. I know she's gotten it in her head she'd like to come with me, and given I don't know if we're even from the same...kinds of Earths? [These kids haven't heard of Avengers and don't know anything about any attack on New York, things that they would've known even in Japan.] But staying here, that one's news to me.
Thanks. For telling me. I was just going to let her have her space, but I guess she might need a pseudo-authority figure to say something.
Well... [His mouth pinches together. Maybe in his upset Akechi's mixed up a few of the facts. Now that he isn't seeing red, it's a touch easier to recall the conversation from memory.] She may have alluded to a desire she had for traveling to other worlds outside of this one, something about becoming a superhero. But the intent is still the same. She's needed back home, we have a mission to complete. Not to mention her guardian is there.
You don't think she's allowed to have aspirations to travel the multiverse should the opportunity present itself.
[Said with a raise of his brows. Listen, they are all stupid teenagers, but she in particular would obviously have 1. a fascination with the very weird and sci-fi concept and 2. a disinterest in listening to anyone telling her off for it. (3. especially Akechi)]
Look, I can't say it's a conversation that's gonna go well, especially if she's still pissed about it. But I'll figure out what's going on here. And maybe everyone needs reminded that any ideas about what happens after is still dependent on there being an after, which none of us have figured out yet.
[The refusal is right there on the tip of his tongue, the snap that doesn't come. But then Clint's question gives him just the slightest pause and that tiny second is enough to get him thinking. To Akechi's credit, after biting off Futaba's head, he really didn't intend to come here and fight her roommate.
So he gives himself time to pause and consider, how to word his thoughts without barking them.]
It's different for us, we have a future we need to protect. Whatever she decides to do after isn't any of my business, but I struggle to believe she's truly satisfied leaving Tokyo as we left it. Not to mention that her friendships seem important to her. [He doesn't mean him, naturally, but the other gaggle of thieving teens from Futaba's home.] She wouldn't abandon them to fight alone.
[Clint is right, of course. What a ridiculous hypothetical situation to freak out about, but Akechi can only hold himself together for as long as there's hope of returning.]
Give it a day or two then, when she's less furious with me. But I would appreciate it.
